The Adoption Experience

The Adoption Experience…

What to expect when you adopt from us.

We promise to put everything on your side to ensure the dog you adopt is the right dog for you. Delivering a positive adoption experience is at the heart of what we do and we are continuously analysing our work, and drawing from our experiences to improve how we match people and families and dogs.

The home visit report is an important part of the matching process and we thank our families for their collaboration and input.

Following a successful home visit, we will organise an appointment for you to come to the kennels and meet the dog or dogs that are suitable candidates for your circumstances, level of experience, expectations and requirements. We will work with you to find the ideal new family member.

At the kennels, you will meet one of the adoption team. Expect to spend around 2 hours minimum on your visit. You will be introduced to the dog(s) you are visiting, you will go for a walk and spend some time with us in the fenced paddock in front of the kennels.

Our team know the dogs very well, we never put our dogs out for adoption unless we feel we have spent enough time with them to know what to expect of them, and your adoption coordinator will go through everything we know about the dog or dogs you are meeting.

We never pressure anyone into taking on a dog, we only adopt our dogs to families who feel 100% that the dog is right for them. A successful adoption requires great commitment and love. Chemistry also plays a role and you can be completely honest with your adoption coordinator, we all understand that it must feel right for you.

There is a nice café on site where you can go and regroup/chat and consult one another if there are a few of you before making any decision, and of course if you need to go away and think about it for a day or two, it’s perfectly fine by us. We want you to be happy and we want the dogs to be in homes where they are truly wanted.

All our dogs go on a two weeks home trial before a formal adoption, which gives our families the opportunity to see if a dog is likely going to be right for them.

Note: If you are adopting a dog who has a medical history and would like your own vet to cast their eye over the reports before visiting a dog, please ask us. We will forward the medical history to your vets at your request, so you can discuss any concerns with them directly.

Our team will go through the following with you:

  • The project
  • The temperament and nature of the dog
  • Any behavioural issues or quirk you need to be aware of.
  • Any training program in place which may need to be continued.
  • The medical history of the dog if there is anything that needs to be discussed and any prognostic or special care. (this is normally discussed before an appointment at the kennels if it is significant in terms of the long term care).*
  • Taking care of your dog during the hometrial period of two weeks prior an adoption.
  • Our post adoption support.

Your Adoption pack contains the following:

  • An informative pack on settling in your new dog, behaviour and training and nutrition.
  • A bag of food for you to take to transition on to the new diet at home.
  • Liver treats and a tube of liver paste, which our dogs adore. It helps with training and enticing them if they are shy.
  • The dog’s passport or vaccination card.
  • Information leaflets on our work.

Your dog comes with the following:

  • A harness (unless it’s a puppy)
  • A collar
  • A Love Underdogs Medal
  • Minimum two weeks of medication if your dog is under treatment or has medication to take on an ongoing basis

During the trial period, the team will be checking in regularly to make sure everything is going well and to offer you support if you need any.

Following a successful home trial, you will be sent an electronic contract to be signed online.

Once we have received the contract, the microchip will be transferred to you. We always remain second on the microchip details.

We will also ask you for your vet details and forward them the medical histories as soon as we have received them.

In the first year of your adoption we will be in touch with you a little more regularly and once a year thereafter.

If at any point you require any advice or wish to speak to our behaviourist, be sure to be in touch and we will be available to support you.

We do expect our families to respond to our contacts and we take this part of the contract seriously. We have found however that families enjoy sharing their adventures with us and sending us photos regularly which we love receiving and which our social media following enjoy seeing.

We are passionate about our dogs and what we do and we hope that this is reflected in the experience our adopters have of welcoming an Underdog in their families. We are eternally grateful for the incredible people who come to us and offer homes for these Underdogs who started their lives with no hope and no real future beyond the pain and suffering that street dogs endure.
